Evžen was born in the Vysočina region with the wonderful breeder Zuzana Šustrová, who raises her dogs with love and care. I came across her kennel just before the puppies were born. When I found out that Zuzka had beautiful, healthy females and was still working with them, I was enchanted. I was particularly intrigued by the combination of the spirited mother, Berie, and the father, Kometa—a family dog with certified therapy dog credentials. Unfortunately, the website stated that the puppies were already spoken for. For several days, I couldn’t get the thought of the black-nosed female Berie out of my head, so I finally decided to try my luck and wrote to Zuzka, telling her a bit about myself, our family, and our plans for a dog—which weren’t particularly grand at the time. And lo and behold, Zuzka gave us the chance to become the owners of one of her puppies. When the little redheads were 5 weeks old, my mom and I went to see them and Zuzka. I left the choice up to Zuzka; I trusted that she would pick the best one for us (which turned out to be true). And that’s when we chose the black-nosed male with the yellow ribbon.
On June 10, 2020, the whole family set out to meet this new challenge and brought Evženka home. We bonded quickly. Our then 9.5-year-old female FCR Coffee cursed us a bit at first for bringing home such a brat, but within a few days they became partners; she seemed to get younger, and Evženka drew on her experience and wisdom.
This description really fits Evžen. He has a wide range of modes he can switch between in the blink of an eye. He’s been like this since he was a puppy, so we’ve simply encouraged this wonderful trait in him. He acts differently with my parents than he does with me. He can lie calmly in a restaurant or while visiting, but he can also work at 100% all day long. His spirited mom and dad—both therapy dogs—blended their traits, and Evžen is the perfect combination of a family dog who loves to work and does it brilliantly.
And now in a bit more detail. Evžen is very friendly. He likes just about all animals; with dogs, he’s non-confrontational and playful. He loves people, but if he doesn’t like someone, he won’t go to them, which is typical for Tollers, unlike other retrievers. He has a strong drive for food and an even stronger one for toys. At the same time, he has good composure. He can concentrate well and isn’t reactive. Most of all, he loves to work. It doesn’t really matter if he’s searching for a person in rubble, retrieving dummies from the water, or doing canicross—he gives his all to everything.
Evžen has nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to his appearance. Although he’s relatively tall, quite long-legged for a Toller, and not very stocky, he’s still a hit at dog shows. He’s simply an athletic, lighter version of a Toller. He has a thick coat, typical features, and a large yet delicate head. And above all, a black nose 🖤.
